What is erectile dysfunction ED?

Erectile dysfunction ED, also known as male impotence, is an extremely common condition which affects men of all ages and their ability to achieve and maintain an erection of the penis that is sufficient for satisfactory sexual intercourse. Although more common in older men, it is estimated that half of all men between 40 and 70 years of age, some 2.3 million men in the UK alone and many more millions around the world, will experience ED at least once in their lifetime. ED occurs due to insufficient blood flow to the penis, however the condition is not the same for all men, for some men they are unable to get an erection of the penis at all, other men can achieve an erection but it is not firm enough for sexual intercourse, whereas many find they can achieve a hard erection only for it to become flaccid (lose its firmness) before or during sex.

It is extremely important for you to understand that ED is a very common medical condition and can have a range of causes including physical, psychological and lifestyle, please allow us to provide you with an insight into some of these known causes.

Physical causes of erectile dysfunction ED (Male Impotence) include:

  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Hormonal

Physical causes and health conditions restrict the blood flow around your body by causing damage to blood vessels, nerves, smooth muscles or fibrous tissue and therefore as a result disease is often the most common form of erectile dysfunction ED. Diseases such as diabetes, kidney disease, chronic alcoholism, multiple sclerosis, atherosclerosis, vascular disease and neurologic disease account for approximately 70 percent of all ED cases, with between 35 and 50 percent of men with diabetes experiencing ED.

Psychological causes of erectile dysfunction ED (Male Impotence) include:

  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Relationship problems

Psychological impotence is where an erection of the penis or penetration fails to occur due to certain thoughts or emotions, pyschological reasons, rather than the physical impossibility which can certainly be helped and treated. Experts believe that psychological factors such as stress, anxiety, guilt, depression, low self-esteem and fear of sexual failure causes 10 to 20 percent of ED cases.

Lifestyle causes of erectile dysfunction ED (Male Impotence) include:

  • Excessive alcohol
  • Smoking
  • Overweight
  • Lack of exercise

It is a misconception to think that erectile dysfunction is an inevitable part of the ageing process; scientific evidence confirms this is not true as an individual's lifestyle choices can certainly contribute to the effects of male impotence. If you smoke or drink excessively this can significantly increase the chances of developing ED as smoking damages the arteries that carry blood around your body and subsequently cause blood flow problems preventing you from achieving or maintaining an erection of the penis. Drinking alcohol in moderation can have some beneficial effects such as alleviating stress and anxiety; however binge drinking and excessive alcohol consumption can lead to ED. Following a recent study, men who consumed more than 2 alcoholic drinks per day were shown to be at a higher risk of developing ED than non-drinkers. Most physicians suggest that treatments should follow the methodical approach from least to most invasive, with a few healthy lifestyle changes having the desired effect such as quitting smoking, losing excess weight and increasing physical activity helping some men regain sexual function.

Other potential causes of erectile dysfunction ED (Male Impotence) include:

  • Surgery
  • Medication
  • Illegal drugs

Surgery, especially radical prostrate and bladder surgery for cancer, can result in ED due to nerves and arteries near the penis becoming damaged. Injury to the penis, prostrate, spinal cord, pelvis and bladder can all lead to ED by harming nerves, arteries, smooth muscles and fibrous tissues of the corpora cavernosa, which is one of a pair of sponge-like regions of erectile tissue which contain most of the blood in the penis during penile erection. In addition many common medicines such as blood pressure drugs, antihistamines, antidepressants, tranquilizers, appetite suppressants and the ulcer drug, cimetidine can all produce ED as a known side effect. Using certain prescription or illegal drugs, such as cannabis, can certainly suggest a chemical cause and since drug effects account for 25 percent of ED sufferers, then cutting back on, substituting or indeed eliminating certain medications or recreational drugs can often alleviate the problem.

Viagra (sildenafil citrate)

Viagra - how does it work?
In medical terms Viagra is a PDE5 inhibitor which affects the smooth muscle cells that line the walls of the corpus cavernosum (the chamber responsible for storing blood to form an erection) preventing blood escaping from the penis wall when an erection is formed. Viagra does not cause an erection to occur, however once stimulated through sexual arousal or natural stimulation this results in the ability to maintain a firmer, erect penis during sexual arousal, stimulation and intercourse, regaining the ultimate in self confidence, self esteem and total enjoyment of a healthy sex life. Viagra does not protect you or your partner from sexually transmitted diseases or pregnancy and it is still your responsibility to practice safe sex through common precautions, remember this treatment is not an aphrodisiac and will not cause any sense of arousal itself. When a man is sexually excited, Viagra helps his penis fill with enough blood to cause an erection and once the sex is over, the erection goes away.

Viagra - how effective is it?
Viagra has statistically proven to be an effective treatment in helping some men attain and sustain a better erection. How a particular man responds to treatment from Viagra, Cialis and Levitra is very much dependent upon the underlying cause of his impotence, the severity of any underlying causes and degree of sexual stimulation.

Viagra - can I take it with alcohol and food?
Yes, however drinking can temporarily impair the ability to get an erection. For the best results we advise not to drink large amounts of alcohol before or while taking Viagra. Whilst Viagra can be taken with or without food, a meal with a high fat content can slow your body's ability to absorb the drug.

Viagra - what is the reaction time?
Each individual is different, however on average; Viagra begins working in approximately 30 minutes following the consumption of a tablet on an empty stomach. Viagra can remain effective for up to five hours, however this does not mean that your erection will last that long, but simply that you will have the ability to attain an improved erection for that period of time. If you take Viagra after a meal with a high fat content, Viagra may take longer than an hour to become effective.

Viagra - are there any side effects?
As with all medicines, Viagra can have side effects. Thankfully, Viagra's side effects are generally only mild and brief. Viagra's common side effects are headache and facial flushing. Less frequently, men taking Viagra have reported indigestion, a stuffy nose and a blue tint to the vision.

Viagra - will it affect my blood pressure?
Viagra can lower blood pressure and does not pose any problems for most men, but Viagra's effect on blood pressure can be dangerous if you take Viagra at the same time as taking a medicine that contains nitrates. Nitrates are one of the medicines that doctors regularly prescribe for angina. If you take Viagra at the same time as taking nitrates, the interaction of the two medicines can cause your blood pressure to fall to a dangerously low and even fatal level.

Viagra - if I have a heart condition can I take it?
A doctor would need to advise you on whether Viagra is suitable in your situation. But if you have a heart condition where sexual activity is not advised, it would not be appropriate for you to take Viagra. Your doctor would also need to advise you on whether any medicines you are taking could react with the Viagra.

Viagra - are there different doses?
Viagra is available in three dosages: 25mg, 50mg and 100mg. A doctor always advises you on which dose to take. Some men may respond to a lower dosage of Viagra, whereas other men may already be taking medicines that interact with the Viagra, in which case a doctor will adjust your dosage accordingly.

Viagra - does it treat the underlying causes of impotence?
Viagra will not resolve any underlying physical cause of male impotence. Hence, any man complaining of impotence must be investigated for possible underlying causes of the condition. But if the cause of your impotence is primarily psychological, it may help to break the cycle of anxiety and failure associated with being unable to achieve a satisfactory erection.

Viagra - can women take it?
Viagra is not licensed for use by women.
